On July 24, the sun rises much farther to the left and not in line with the street. One thing that may lead to this confusion is that Montreal's street grid is northwest-southeast and northeast-southwest, but residents always call it north-south and east-west. You do make a good point about the cyclist's being hidden by signs on the traffic-light pole. John S.
